Proxemics with Virtual Human in AR

Abstract

The small augmented visual region of optical see-through HMDs can lead to an information conflict between the central and peripheral vision. We examined the effects of such visual information conflict on human locomotion in the proximity of a virtual human (VH) as well as a potential solution based on vibrotactile feedback. In the study, we controlled view condition, footstep vibration, VH behavior and compared the users’ collision avoidance behavior for VH with those for a real human. Results showed significant effects of view condition on the behavior and benefits of vibrotactile feedback on user’s perception on the VH.
